Blood Python Care Guide

Clear, beginner-friendly guidance built from real-world breeder practices. Use this as a baseline for confident, steady care.

Concise essentials for healthy, calm hatchlings.

Enclosure Basics

For hatchlings, a secure, simple enclosure reduces stress. Start with a properly sized tub or front-opening terrarium with tight-fitting vents and a single, easy-to-clean layout.

Consider providing two snug hides in a too large enclosure: one warm, one cool.

Add a sturdy water bowl that cannot be tipped.

Keep layout minimal to make monitoring easy.

Temperature & Humidity

Consistent warmth and steady humidity are the keys to solid feeding responses and clean sheds.

Warm Side

84–86°F

Controlled heat mat or radiant panel. Incandescent lighting tends to over-dry the enclosure. Any warmer and bloods tend to get very grumpy.

Cool Side

75–78°F

Provide heat overnight if your room gets any cooler for extended periods.

Aim for 50+% humidity, with boosts to 70+% during shed cycles. Ensure substrate does not stay saturated.

Substrate

Choose low-dust, moisture-friendly bedding to support humidity without staying wet. Replace sections quickly to keep the enclosure fresh.

Kraft paper works very well. Cypress mulch or coconut husk are also reliable.

Spot-clean daily; full change every 2-4 weeks unless on paper. Change when soiled.

Feeding

Blood pythons thrive on predictable feeding routines. Offer appropriately sized prey and avoid overfeeding.

Hatchlings: once every 7–10 days, prey about the width of the snake.

Adults: once every 3–4 weeks with prey sized to body condition.

Feed in the enclosure to reduce stress and handling risks.

Handling

Calm handling builds trust. Keep sessions short and steady, especially in the first weeks.

Wait 48 hours or more after feeding before handling.

Support the body fully; avoid fast movements.

Keep sessions brief until the snake settles.

General Maintenance

Routine checks prevent issues. Keep simple logs for feeding, sheds, and weight changes.

Replace water and sanitize bowl twice a week minimum. Bloods will not drink stale water from a dirty bowl.

Monitor shed quality; adjust humidity if sheds are patchy. Soak in lukewarm water to assist with stuck shed. Pay attention to eye caps.

Short answers to the most common beginner questions. If your situation is unique, reach out any time at [email protected].

What size enclosure should a hatchling start in?

A secure 6–12 quart tub is ideal. Prioritize tight hides, gentle heat, and minimal stress before upsizing.

How often should I feed a young blood python?

Offer appropriately sized meals every 7–10 days. Consistency matters more than aggressive growth.

What humidity range is best?

Aim for 50–70% with brief spikes during shedding. Provide a humid hide if necessary and a clean water bowl.

Are blood pythons aggressive?

They are confident and strong, not “mean.” Calm, deliberate handling and a secure setup build trust fast.
